Here are some of the most commonly asked questions by those who want to achieve the ultimate goal of hot 6
pack abs:
- Are crunches the best exercises for abs? - I don't recommend the traditional feet
restrained crunch. This is simply because it's not the greatest workout for the abdominal muscles and puts an
unnecessary and unwelcome strain on the lower back. Most of the work during a crunch is not done by the abs but
by the psoas muscle which is a hip flexor muscle. It's only towards the end of the movement that the lower abs
do any work.
- Can exercising the abs help back pain? - One of the most common causes of lower back pain,
is surprisingly the lack of taught stomach muscles. A flabby stomach with relaxed muscles combined with a tight
hip flexor can result in an awkward and unnatural tilt of the hip. This puts an additional strain on the lower
back as it arches to compensate. A strong set of abs muscles will stabilise the core and eliminate excess
arching and therefore lower back pain?
- What if any of the various Ab machines do you recommend? - In a word "none" of them! You
don't need them to get a great workout. They may all help to varying degrees in isolating the muscles that
provide you with the elusive 6 pack abs, but similar results can be obtained using nothing more than the floor
and an exercise ball.
- Why do some people appear to have abs without having to do specific exercises? - We all
have a 6 pack generally hiding beneath a layer of fat. Lose the fat, tone the muscles and your 6 pack abs will
be visible for all to see. Those that seem to naturally have a six pack will generally be lean and low in fat.
For men anything below 12% fat and the 6 pack will be visible, the same being true of women at below 18%
fat.
- How do I get rid of my love handles? - A combination of cardio vascular training and a
controlled diet will help you get rid of excess fat around the stomach area. Different activities will burn
different levels of energy and should be combined with some weight training to tone and add some bulk to the
underlying muscles.
